Event Details
Come learn about historic circus women who walked on tightropes across waterfalls, rode horseback in drag, caught bullets, and performed feats of electrical magic. These women did more than just entertain crowds: they used spectacular skills, unusual bodies, and larger-than-life personalities to embrace the unusual and challenge the public idea of what femininity can be.
Betsy Golden Kellem is the author of Jumping Through Hoops: Performing Gender in the 19th Century Circus. Her writing has appeared in outlets including The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Atlas Obscura, and Slate, and she is an Emmy winner for her video series on P.T. Barnum.
Copies of her book will be available for sale for $20, cash or venmo.
