The Union Army's use of balloons for aerial observation and aerial direction of artillery fire was the United States Army's first soujourn into Airpower. And President Lincoln will be the first head of state to receive an electronic message from an aircraft, in the air, to a receiving station on the ground.
Mark Albertson is the historical research editor for the Army Aviation magazine, and author of serval books, magazine articles and newspaper commentaries. He has also been an adjunct faculty member at Norwalk Community College for many years.
